The Animated Series' Showrunner Unveils Alastor and Rosie's Backstory Serves as a Huge Season 3 Tease
Devoted fans of the series finally received a much-anticipated backstory in the second season's episode 4, called “It's a Deal.” This episode will probably spark a lot of discussion and pose many inquiries about the nature of one particular demon Overlord who appears significantly stronger than anyone before understood. These fresh disclosures include a look into the human life of a beloved character before his death and condemnation to Hell.
A Significant Hint for Upcoming Installments
The show's creator shared a secret about the episode – it serves as a major tease for the third season. She also offered more insight into the methodology of creating the mortal forms of her infernal cartoon figures.
Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back discloses that popular personality Alastor, the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he established communication with the afterlife beforehand to obtain a powerful role there. Rosie, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, promised Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.
This raises an important query: How is Rosie powerful enough to elevate Alastor over all other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the first stepping stone in a much bigger story that encompasses a great deal, leading into season 3,” the showrunner states. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The answer could be various factors, but the answer is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
It is uncertain the duration viewers will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have approved seasons 3 and 4, but the creator often notes that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons are undated. Still, she states withholding on specific information is a crucial aspect of keeping season 2’s focus where it belongs.
“The challenge of any agreement with demons, or stories that have enigmas, is providing people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that as we go, and allowing that be gratifying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Mysteries Resolved in Season 3
The creator assures that season 3 will address the queries fans have been asking, like why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to vanish for seven years, which weakened his influence in Hell.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a larger story,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode provides a further look into what the main characters of Demonic Sinners appeared as as humans, the second after seeing another character's Victorian-era human form in the second episode. The creator says that significant consideration was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold great significance,” she says. “They range from looking quite distinct from their infernal version to seeming very similar. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between going with a design that represents the character, as opposed to selecting an option that's historically correct. We leaned toward making something that just felt like it was him.”
She mentions the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one really had extended hair of that style in that historical period.’ But at the same time, we believe the outline is so important, and we also just felt he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he's a hermit, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we create the mortal forms of these characters […] it is a very enjoyable process to investigate and figure out. I'm excited for people to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
New episodes of Hazbin Hotel season 2 are released on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
