Keely Hodgkinson Wraps Up Campaign with Victorious Display at Athlos Meet in New York
The athlete recorded her personal best of 1:54.61 the previous season in London.
Keely Hodgkinson concluded her two-lap season with a win at the all-female Athlos meet in New York on Friday evening.
{The reigning Olympic champion, who earned bronze at the global championships recently, dominated an outstanding win in 1:56.53 in what was just her sixth appearance in a season impacted by a muscle issue.
Compatriot and global silver winner Georgia Bell finished second again in 1:58.33, while the athlete from St Vincent Shafiqua M. (1:58.57) secured third place.
"I haven't competed much this season so it was probably less of a struggle for me to go out there and be motivated to perform," stated Hodgkinson.
"The atmosphere at the event is crazy so it was really, really fun."
The women-only event filled Icahn Stadium in its second edition, bringing a festive vibe to conventional athletics, with musical performances and Tiffany & Co. crowns replacing standard medals.
The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena Williams, who is wed to the founder of Athlos Alexis Ohanian, was present to present the winners with their crowns.
Last year's winners received sixty thousand dollars (forty-four thousand six hundred and three pounds) - one of the largest prize purses in athletics.
The event also drew several top athletes, as the Kenyan three-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Faith K. triumphed in the mile race, crossing the finish line in four hours 17.78 minutes.
American Brittany Brown, the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, won the sprint double.
